If you're looking to exchange foreign currency in Sydney, you're spoiled for choice. As Australia's largest city, Sydney has lots of exchange services to choose from – but it's a good idea to shop around to make sure you're getting good value for your money.

Keep reading to find some of the top places to convert your cash in the Sydney CBD.

S Money is an online currency exchange, but they have a pickup location in the CBD. Based on our research, S Money offers the best exchange rates in Sydney but charge a percentage-based service fee and a $14 service fee for home delivery. For example, S Money charges 1.8% when converting AUD to USD. In comparison, Travel Money Oz and Travelex add a markup of 3.70% when exchanging to US dollars.

2. United Currency Exchange

Founded in 2006, United Currency Exchange offers great exchange rates on major currency pairs and has one location in Sydney CBD. They are open four days a week from 10am to 6:00pm. You can pre-order online or in-store, and there are more than 35 currencies available. Despite this, their website is very outdated and they only accept cash as payment.

3. Travelex

As one of the most recognised names in the foreign exchange space, Travelex allows you to buy and sell over 45 currencies online and in-store. Travelex has one location in the Sydney CBD, their online rates are much better than in-store. They have a strong presence in airports, shopping malls and other convenient locations.

4. Travel Money Oz

Travel Money Oz supports more than 60 currencies, and has a travel money card that can be pre-loaded with up to 10 currencies. You can buy currency from Travel Money Oz online or in-store. Before Covid, Travel Money Oz had multiple locations in the Sydney CBD but are gradually looking to open more stores. Currently, they have one location on Pitt Street.

5. Crown Currency

Founded in 1998, Crown Currency has 55 stores across Australia and has two locations in the city. Crown Currency offers services including cash exchange, traveller's cheques, and international money transfers. Unlike other services, Crown Currency doesn't display exchange rates on their website so you will need to contact them for a quote. Their stores are open from 9am to 5pm.

• City Forex - great service but exchange rates aren't the best.
• Bloom Forex - great exchange rates for RMB.
• International Currency Exchange - convenient locations with competitive exchange rates.
• Know the mid-market rate. Use Google to find the latest mid-market rate. This will let you work out if the rate being offered is fair.
• Shop around online. Rather than visiting several stores in person, shop around online to find a provider with strong rates and low fees.
• Check for fees. Make sure you check the fine print to discover what fees apply to your transaction. Even if an exchange bureau claims that it doesn't charge any fees, they typically add a margin to the real exchange rate.
• Avoid airport exchange bureaus. Exchange bureaus at airports generally offer poor exchange rates and higher fees.
• Steer clear of ATMs. Withdrawing money from a foreign ATM may be an easy option, but the high fees and disappointing exchange rates mean it's also quite expensive.

Australian banknotes are issued in $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. Coins are available in 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2.

Buying Australian dollars at banks or through ATMs in Sydney is easy and convenient. How do i get my currency.

You can either

• Head into one of our stores to buy or sell currency
• Order online and collect your currency at one of our 15 store collection locations
• Order online and have it securely delivered to any address in Australia

Is home delivery safe?

Absolutely. We use StarTrack by Australia Post. The driver will  require you to provide I.D before handing the order over . It will not be left unattended or given to anyone else.

What if I’m not home?

Your order will go to your local post office. You will be notified and can head down and collect your order when it’s convenient. Just remember to bring your I.D.

When will my currency be ready for pick up or delivered?

We process your order as soon as we’ve received payment and we try our best to get this to you.

Store Collection orders are available on within 1-3 business day  – once we have received your payment.

Home Delivery  orders usually arrive the within 2-3 business days – once we have received your payment.

You will be notified by email and text as soon as your currency is ready for collection or delivery.

Where are your stores?

We have stores in Sydney and Melbourne plus a number of collection locations across NSW, VIC, QLD, WA and SA.

With these collection locations, you must order online and pay before you head into store.

If you don’t live in these areas, we offer safe, fast home delivery to every address in Australia.

The S Money Melbourne CBD store is located at 44 Spencer Street, Melbourne VIC 3000.

The store is right next to the Great Southern Hotel and less than 100 metres from Southern Cross Train Station. It is open 9am to 5pm – Monday to Friday and 10am to 3:30pm on Saturday.

The  S Money Sydney CBD store  is located at Wharf 6, Circular Quay. The store is on the wharf nearest to The Museum of Contemporary Art at The Rocks. It is open 9am to 5pm – Monday to Friday and 10am to 3:30pm on Saturday.

You can sell us your foreign currency at our Melbourne or Sydney store.

How do I pay for my currency?

If you walk in-store, you can pay in cash.

Alternatively if you would like to lock in the rate and the stock, you can place an order online by selecting “Go In-Store” and “Bank Transfer”

For store collection and home delivery orders, you will receive an email with instructions on how to pay.

Most customers pay us by an internet banking transfer.

Payments must be made from an account in your name and not from a business account.

How much can I order?

We don’t have a minimum order amount.

For Home delivery or Post Office Collection orders, you can order up to $6,000 AUD in one order, and up to $9,500 AUD per day.

For Store Pick orders, you can order up to $20,000 AUD in one order.

Can I tell you what denominations I want?

Yes! For popular currencies, click  Request Denominations when getting a quote.

Please note – denominations requests are not available on all currencies and are not guaranteed . We do our very best to provide the mix of notes you want but it really depends on what stock we have at the time.

These requests are performed on a best efforts basis.

Are there any fees?

Our fees depend on the currency and amount you order.

We aim to be upfront and transparent about what we charge and what it’s for .

Unlike other businesses we don’t try to hide this charge in the exchange rate. All orders will incur a service fee. This covers the cost of buying the currency and GST, along with a small profit.

ASIC regulated

Like all reputable money exchanges, we are registered with AUSTRAC and regulated by the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC).

S Money complies with the relevant laws pertaining to privacy, anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism finance. This means you are required to provide I.D. when you place an order. It also means the order must be paid for by the same person ordering the currency and you must show your identification again when receiving your order.
